How to Install Grating Clips

Grating clips install from above with a standard wrench. Set the panel on its supports, place a clip so it bridges the bearing bars and grips the support steel, and tighten the bolt until the clip sits snug. There is no welding, no drilling and no need to reach under the platform.

How do grating clips work?

A grating clip clamps the grating to the steel it rests on. On a G-clip style clip such as U CLIPS, a top plate sits across the bearing bars, a toothed grip jaw hooks under the support flange, and one bolt pulls the two together.

Because nothing is welded, a panel can be lifted out for maintenance and put back with the same clips.

See the clip on the U CLIPS page.

Tools you need

How to install grating clips, step by step

  1. Set the grating panel on its supports with the bearing bars spanning between them.
  2. Place the clip from above so it bridges the bearing bars and engages the support steel below.
  3. Tighten the bolt with a standard wrench until the clip sits snug against the grating and the support.
  4. Repeat at each clip location: at least four clips per panel, plus one at every intermediate support.

Grating clip spacing

Put at least 4 clips on every panel, one near each corner where the panel rests on its end supports, plus 1 at every intermediate support the panel crosses. A practiced two-person crew installs each clip in about a minute.

Total the clips for your platform with the calculator.

How to secure bar grating to a steel beam

Clips grip the flange of the beam or angle the grating rests on, so the grating is held down without welding it to the beam. That keeps the galvanized coating on both parts intact.

Welding and weld lugs also work, but they need a welder, a hot-work permit and coating repair at every attachment point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do grating clips need welding or drilling?

No. FastGrate clips install from above with a standard wrench, with no welding, no drilling and no access needed below the platform.

How many grating clips per panel?

At least 4 per panel, plus 1 at every intermediate support the panel crosses. The grating clip calculator totals it for a whole platform.

How long does it take to install grating clips?

About one minute per clip once a two-person crew has the routine down.

Can I remove a grating panel after installing clips?

Yes. Loosen the bolt, take off the clip and lift the panel. The same clips go back on when the panel is replaced.

How do I install clips on fiberglass grating?

Use M CLIPS. The M-shaped saddle straddles two adjacent bars and a bolt pulls the panel down to the support.
