Material choice is the single biggest driver of grating clip lifespan and cost. Mechanically galvanized carbon steel covers the majority of general industrial installs; stainless takes over when the environment is wet, corrosive, or salty.
| Factor | Galvanized Carbon Steel | Stainless Steel (304/316) |
|---|---|---|
| Corrosion protection | Zinc barrier coating, good for general industrial exposure | Alloy is inherently corrosion-resistant; no coating to damage |
| Best environments | Indoor, sheltered outdoor, general industrial | Washdown, chemical, wastewater (304); marine/offshore (316) |
| Standard | ASTM B695 | ASTM A240 / A276 |
| Relative cost | Lowest | Higher up front, lower lifetime cost in corrosive service |
| Lifespan in harsh service | Limited once the zinc layer is consumed | Decades in the environments each grade is rated for |
Use galvanized for dry and general industrial service. It is the most economical option and matches galvanized grating. Move to 304 stainless for corrosive or washdown environments, and 316 for marine, offshore, and chloride exposure. A simple rule: if the grating itself is stainless, the clips should be too.
